Over the weekend of June 30-July 1 2007, Saxlingham Chapel in Norfolk celebrated its 120th anniversary.
Constructed as temporary premises it is a classic ‘tin tabernacle’. The church says that the chapel fits its surroundings and has a warmth and welcome and period that would be missed if it was knocked down and replaced by a modern alternative.
However, God is blessing the church there. The numbers have grown and the number of activities and meetings have also expanded. They need more than two rooms and a single toilet.
The vision of the church is to extend the building to the rear in order to create two more rooms and a well equipped kitchen area. The extension will be in the same style as the main chapel and compliment its original design. So the church is in the midst of raising funds. It has already raised over £25,000, but needs something like £85,000.
In order to help with this project, Sarah Masson has produced a CD of songs, the proceeds of which will go towards the new building.
She has an excellent voice and the arrangements of the songs, though fairly pedestrian, work very well. This is a CD for people who like a mixture of both old and new. Some of the older titles include ‘Amazing Grace’, ‘Search Me O God’, ‘May the Mind of Christ My Saviour’, and even an upbeat version of the old mission hall classic, ‘When The Roll is Called Up Yonder’. There are also a couple of original and more modern compositions. These are ‘You Loved Me So’, ‘With All My Heart’, ‘Stay Close to Jesus’.
It is great to see a village chapel being blessed by God. No doubt the devil would love to herd all Christians into a few big churches in the cities leaving vast tracts of our land without any viable witness.
