It was, of course, inevitable, but many of us cannot help but be sad that John Stott is retiring and will speak for the last time in public at this year’s Keswick Convention.
However, it will not be just through his books that we can continue to benefit from his learning and godliness. With some foresight, Zondervan, in conjunction with the Langham Partnership, has published a DVD showing six lectures given by the great man. These lectures cover what is in many ways the bread and butter of evangelicalism — understanding Scripture and applying it to life. The lectures were given to an audience over a number of weeks at Stott’s home church, All Souls, Langham Place in London, and cover the following topics: The Authority of Scripture, The Double Authorship of Scripture; Basic Principles of Biblical Interpretation; The Problem of Culture; Developing a Christian Mind and Making an Impact on Society.
Each lecture is characteristically ‘Stottish’, being biblical, lucid, winsome and not avoiding the difficult questions. This would make a fine few hours viewing for any Christian or groups within the church. The accompanying booklet contains well-judged discussion questions to go with each lecture. It might especially give a good grounding to students about to go off to university.
