The Lamb of God

Substitutionary sacrifice

THE LAMB OF GOD
The Bible's unfolding revelation of sacrifice

This book forms part of the Mentor series which is intended for the more thinking and theologically-minded Christian. Based on a series of lectures delivered at Knox Theological Seminary in the States, Robert Reymond traces the theme of the substitutionary sacrifice of Christ as the Lamb of God through the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation.

His analysis of the Messianic prophesies in Isaiah 7.14-16; 9.6-7 and 52.13Ð53.12 are particularly helpful, especially to anyone involved in Jewish evangelism, where a serious discussion on these texts is required.

However, this scholarly work is not for the faint-hearted. His use of the original languages, technical theological terms, the names of various scholars and a rather obscure vocabulary makes this book inaccessible for the average reader.

Ministers might find it helpful, especially the alliterated headings of each chapter, which, with a little added flair and simplification, could form the basis of an interesting sermon series. I couldn’t help think that overall the book falls between two stools — that of an academic theological work and a practical devotional treatise on the work of Christ.

Nevertheless, with a little perseverance, a concentrated mind and a very good dictionary, this book may prove useful to the serious-minded student.
