‘As effervescent as chilled champagne and as comforting as a tray of Belgian chocolates… Heaven in your Handbag is for the hard-working, dance all night, but still morally upright chick about town…’
What on earth…? That was my gut reaction on reading the blurb on the back of the book. It didn’t get much better just a few pages into the introduction. However, read on…as I did!
This book is written for single girls in their late teens and 20s, though I wouldn’t limit it to just them. There are helpful insights for those who enjoy a blunt, contemporary and sometimes shocking style. Mazzi does not mince her words!
There are four main sections — our selves, our loves, our work and our friends and family. Much of what Mazzi says is rooted in Scripture. While sympathising with struggles faced by young Christian women, she states that we are to be strong during the down times and become more like Christ in our struggles.
There is, however, a confusing message under the heading of ‘self spring clean’. There is a hint of pleasing God by our works which could be very misleading to a young Christian. She also takes a non-committal stance on sex before marriage. If I was a young reader, she may just have given me the justification I need to go ahead.
Given these concerns, this light read does contain some sound advice. It could be used to provoke small group discussion or as an individual read.
