Jonathan Edwards is a towering figure in evangelical theology. Nearly 250 years after his death, he continues to be a rich source of inspiration to those who read him.

So Josh Moody has done us a great service in writing us an introduction to Jonathan Edwards’s thought. He briefly covers Edwards’s views on revival, Christian experience (including some of the more extraordinary phenomena which Edwards witnessed, and which are witnessed today in some circles), the nature of truth, Christian leadership and even family life. At every point Moody tries to show us how relevant Edwards is to today’s world.

There are other books which are designed to excite us about Edwards, most notably several by John Piper, but this one gives a good idea of the range of Edwards’s thought. I was left wanting to go back to the man himself, which is surely Josh Moody’s intention.

But here is the problem. Most of Edwards’s voluminous writing remains unavailable in an affordable and readable form. We are enormously indebted to Banner of Truth for their two-volume Works of Jonathan Edwards, but the small size of the print and the large size of the books have exhausted too many. Some smaller volumes are now in print. So read Josh Moody, and then read what you can from Jonathan Edwards himself. His grasp of Scripture is still able to captivate hearts and minds for Christ.
