Walking the walk

DOCWALK
By Larry Dixon
Christian Focus. 278 pages. £7.32 (Amazon)
ISBN 1 84550 052 0

The subtitle helps to explain what Docwalk actually means — ‘putting into practice what you say you believe’. The aim of the book is to help believers to an active obedience to the Word of God as the solid foundation for a God-honouring life.

He begins with a resume of the gospel through which God ransoms, redeems, reconciles and rescues us. Then comes a healthy dose of realism about the Bible, its nature and its purpose.

Having laid that base, Dr. Dixon continues to build with wide-ranging Bible references. Sections follow on the place of the mind, the emotions, the will, the tongue, and our whole physical existence generally (I’m to present my body?!). Then comes a very helpful chapter on the believer’s associations; firstly with the world, and then with other Christians in the local church.

The last part is concerned with our attitudes, actions, assurance and anticipation. The whole book is full of applied quotes from the breadth of Scripture, and communicates its message well. A great deal of ground is covered, and helpfully. Humour and wisdom combine to produce a work that would be of value to growing Christians. Its length makes it a book to be digested in pieces, rather than read while on Paddington Station waiting for the train after the one cancelled an hour ago! Its content makes it a book that is a welcome and health-giving corrective in an age that is so bewitched by experience. Sorry about the title!
