Love work, love life!

The working day

LOVE WORK, LIVE LIFE!
By David Oliver
Authentic Media. 128 pages. £7.99
ISBN 1 86024 529 3

This book is intended to stir you up to make the most of your life at work.

The author is a leader of Basingstoke Community Church and has run his own business. He believes that ‘the workplace is the primary arena in which the kingdom of God can actually touch our lives and the lives of those we work with’ (p.12). He sets out to pull down the fatal distinction between ‘work’ and ‘Christian work’ and to equip Christians to do all their work for the glory of God.

In an easy-going colloquial style, in short chapters with punch and plenty of stories, Oliver teaches us to imagine the impossible: daily work that helps to build the kingdom of God. He continually draws on scriptural quotations and allusions to persuade us. He covers topics such as the purpose of work, sexual temptation, and mentoring in the workplace. In a series of chapters that relate the church to the workplace he provides many helpful suggestions, particularly for church staff.

The book is marred by the omission of the appendices to which the reader is encouraged to turn at the end (p.21). Stories of dreams (p.30) and prophetic gifts (p.38) should not deter any from reading this strong encouragement to live our whole lives for God, not just our ‘church’ and ‘home’ lives.
