FOR THE LOVE OF GOD (CD)
New Songs for the People of God (vol. 2)
By Don Carson, featuring music by Rob Smith (http://emu.mu)
£13.99

This one really was a big surprise! Don Carson is one of the leading New Testament scholars of our time. His commentary The Gospel According to John is brilliant, and on my top ten list.

However, I was a rather nonplussed by his Holy Sonnets of the Twentieth Century. Maybe his verse was a little too clever for my taste? OK, I'm a complete Philistine when it comes to poetry, but somehow it just didn't have the same contemporary ring characteristic of his other work.

We tried to sing one of his hymns at church a while ago and, although it was all good solid dependable stuff, it seemed fairly heavy going and musically bland. Not really a song for the people. Yet this CD really blew my socks off!

Some maintain that the music doesn't matter, and that the words are everything. Content is certainly extremely important, but the style of music can do so much to help or hinder. Too many of my reviews complain about great music with shallow (or worse) lyrics. But here the balance is very good indeed.

Rob Smith (famous for songs such as ‘Behold the Lamb of God’), of Emu Music in Australia (famous in the UK for ‘The King, the Snake, and the Promise’) heads up a large team of capable instrumentalists and singers for this project (he also wrote nearly half of the tunes).

This CD will teach and admonish you. It will also get you tapping your feet. It also comes with scores and lyrics in PDF format. In a word: Wow!
