There is something about wrapping yourself in the life and experiences of someone else by reading a good biography. Their joys become your joys; their sorrow, your sorrow; their mistakes, your mistakes; and their triumphs, your triumphs.

God’s Little People — Little Women in the Bible, part of a series on small Bible characters, is a collection of mini biographies. Many of the women we may not have heard of, some of them are not even named! But all of them have qualities to aspire to. Brian Edwards has brought these people to life for us.

While reading his book I was struck by how rich God’s Word is. There is a wealth of things to be learned from even the littlest people in the Bible. I was moved to pray that I would become more like these women — that I would trust and pray like Hannah did when she was in ‘bitterness of soul’; that I would gain Abigail’s wisdom and gentleness; that I would learn to listen, love and adore Jesus as Mary did.

His book is a worthwhile read, even though it is not an easy one. In some parts it is too speculative and cluttered with unnecessary detail. Overall I was touched and inspired by his thoughtful, warm-hearted descriptions of these godly Christian women, but some parts left me unmoved.

Character studies are always difficult. How do we focus on a particular person and yet be Christ-centred rather than people-centred? Perhaps this book does not point to Christ as clearly as it could. But nevertheless, God’s Little People is a little gem. Read it!
