BIBLE DETECTIVES: GENESIS

This series by CF goes some way to plugging the ‘gap in the market’ of study books for primary-aged children.

Each numbered study is one or two sides (A4) long and includes a basic retelling and explanation of the set Bible passage with puzzles or word games mixed in. There are 39 studies in this book, with answers to the puzzles at the back of the book.

My first impression was very favourable, but closer scrutiny revealed two weaknesses.

First, there is very little application or challenge and very few questions to get the reader thinking for themselves about the issues involved either in the text or via the puzzles.

Secondly, the small print and ‘busy’ pages may be off-putting for the younger end of the target age-range, undermining the aim for independent reading. Despite disappointment at a missed opportunity, I would still say this is a good investment!
