This is a very interesting little book of Christian biography providing a fascinating account of the background to the lives of six famous people with the emphasis on before their conversion.
Take, for instance, the notable Augustine of Hippo. We all know of him as a godly church father … but before that … what a lad! The striking account of his mother pleading earnestly in prayer for him throughout all his misadventures until he finally came to faith is very moving. Her spiritual birth pains for his soul far exceeded the physical.
In the same way, the author briefly describes the earlier lives of Jonathan Edwards, Isobel Kuhn, Charles Spurgeon, John Bunyan and Selina, Countess of Huntingdon, and explains: ‘It is surely true that the darkest mine from which believers take spiritual gold is the dark mine of their own pre-conversion experience.’ Edifying, quick to read and well-researched, we are encouraged to pray on for our loved ones who don’t yet know Christ and are reminded that nothing is impossible with God.
