THE FAMILY YOU WANT
By John A Huffman, Jr.
Christian Focus. 221 pages. £7.99
ISBN 1 85792 933 0

Essentially a very practical manual to help Christians build a loving, godly family, John Huffman’s book is full of very readable chapters that would challenge any reader.

God’s Word is applied to all the situations discussed throughout, so that you don’t just get a pastor’s experience and views, but also a biblical perspective on very practical issues.

Perhaps the title would put off some readers who may think that the book doesn’t apply to them as they are without children. While a large section does relate to raising a family of your own, almost as much of the book deals with the subject of the marriage relationship, with another section on relating to your older parents. Although my own children are now adults, I still found that the book had a great deal to offer my stage in life, and a perspective as a grandparent and friend to those in the thick of family living.

The drawback to the book is the strong presence of American culture and language, which is intrusive at times. There is a heavy reliance on different forms of therapy, which would not be the norm in our UK society. However, when you take in the American divorce statistics among Christians, the alarm bells should surely be ringing for our own country and this book certainly serves to give some helpful guidance as to how God would have us live, rather than being sucked in to the worldly ideas of our surroundings.

I really enjoyed this book, found it extremely readable and will certainly be passing it on to others.
