This month sees the launch of an excellent new magazine edited by Emma Balch who usually writes this column for EN. For obvious reasons we couldn't let Emma review her own mag, so...
The Blurb focuses on student culture and endeavours to 'give a few insights into what it is really like to be Christian and a student'.
The visual impact is impressive - you would not be embarrassed being seen carrying it. There are sections on student news (new CU starts at Nottingham Trent this term, first ever CU mission in Cornwall...), evangelism, reviews, travel and much more.
I'm not quite sure what to make of the fashion page though (handsome but cheapskate Rich buys a new hoodie?). The little pieces on the female footballers, the best places to go in Birmingham as a student, and Christians feeling as if they are living in a goldfish bowl with everyone waiting for them to make a mistake seemed cheerful, upbeat and helpful.
The stomach is a vital part of student anatomy and the 'Blurb £10 challenge' recounts how Bethan Thomas of Cardiff University fed six hungry mouths for the appropriate amount of money (another winning combination from Tesco). Coming out in October it was bound to have 'Surviving as a Fresher' advice, but this is handled with great fun (eat some fruit and veg?).
It's a zippy read and those I showed The Blurb to felt it got the balance between awareness of today's student environment and punchy biblical input just right. And Emma wants to hear from you if you have any ideas for future issues.
You can email her at theblurb@uccf.org.uk or text her on 07967 485760. Go on - disturb the Blurb.
