Responding to the Challenge of Evolution

The Darwin debate

RESPONDING TO THE CHALLENGE OF EVOLUTION
By Kevin Logan
Kingsway
ISBN 1 84291 110 4

This is an unusual but helpful approach to the Creation/Evolution debate. The author reviews the arguments from both sides, leaving the reader to make a decision.

He represents each position fairly, though he is a little out-of-date on creationist approaches to Neanderthal Man, the geological column, etc. Likewise, he was not aware of the work of Andrew Snelling et al, as reported in Evangelicals Now, on radiometric dating. He reports on the letter by leading scientists following the Gateshead controversy last year, but fails to report on the counter letter by another team of scientists supporting an open approach to the subject. There is a peculiar statement on p. 181: 'The creationists argue that such a bloodthirsty system of creation makes God more like the devil.' I'm afraid that I know of no such creationist position (and he is quoting from the reviewer in these pages!). Is there a misprint on page 190?

The author refers to the gospel essentials and lists as the fourth point, 'a fall that wasn't'! In spite of these flaws (in my view), it is a useful book for anyone interested in the subject to read.
