THE 'WHAT WOULD JESUS EAT?' COOKBOOK
By Don Colbert MD
Thomas Nelson. 211 pages. $19.99

This is a cookbook based on a nutrition plan found in a book by the same author (a medical doctor) called 'What would Jesus Eat?'
From the plan the author claims the readers will:
* understand why foods forbidden in the OT dietary laws are un-healthy for us;
* learn how to follow Jesus's eating model with foods that are available today;
* realise the health benefits of the food Jesus ate and the health risks of the food to be avoided.
It is important to understand the standpoint of the author and consider whether or not it is biblical. The apostle Peter had a vision given by God so that he should no longer call anything impure that God himself has made clean; the apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians reassures believers that it is OK to eat anything sold in the meat markets. So beware! We are not under the Old Testament law.
However, there is much good, well-founded nutritional advice in this cookbook and any Christians would do well to consider their eating habits in the light of the information. After all, our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and we agree that gluttony is to be avoided.
The ten major steps recommended to change our eating habits are included before the varied, nutritional recipes. It would happily sit on my cookbook shelf and it interests me to eliminate processed foods from my diet and include wholegrain products and plenty of vegetables. Maybe a slight downside for cooks is that the book is American and therefore has US measurements - ounces and cups. It also sometimes includes ingredients we are not familiar with or which are called by another name. A cautious recommendation for the discerning Christian cook!
