Geoffrey Thomas's biography of this 'unsung hero of 20th century Reformed Theology' provides a well researched, warm, compassionate and realistic account of the life of Ernest (Ernie) Reisinger who ministered in Southern Baptist churches in America.

This is the story of a man whose life spanned the second half of the century and saw wartime naval service and the creation of a successful construction business, before embarking on an energetic ministry that helped restore the Southern Baptist Convention to her historical doctrinal roots.

Two highlights of the book for the reviewer was firstly the story of a carpenter with the delightful name, Elmer Albright, who withstood much ridicule to witness to young Ernie and then proceeded to nurture him in the faith. Later in the biography comes a very moving account, complete with extracts of passionate pastoral letters, of how Ernie coped with a 'prodigal son' who kicked over the traces for a number of years before being restored to Christ.

However the core of the book revolves around Reisinger's hold upon and proclamation of the 'doctrines of grace' in the midst of theological confusion and weakness in Southern Baptist circles. At times the book becomes becalmed in too many theological explanations and expositions of Reformed truths, which, though necessary in part to understand the man and his times, hinder the flow of the biography and call for some patience from the reader.

A good read, but I suggest you browse thoroughly before buying to gain a flavour of the biographical/systematics mix of the book.
