The main aim of this book is to provide churches with a set of studies concerning radical Christian living within the workplace. Considering that this is where most of us spend 70% of our waking hours it is a highly important issue and, as the authors point out, churches need to be equipped in dealing with it.
This contribution differs from similar books in the genre (for example by Mark Greene and Tony Campolo), as it is specifically designed to structure and aid presentations, talks or workshops. It can be read cover to cover but I felt its potential would be fully realised in a series of midweek small group discussions.
Issues raised by the authors include, 'How can I best serve God in my job', 'Is it right for a Christian not to do "full-time" Christian service?' and 'Is it OK to earn lots of money?'. These questions and others are dealt with concisely over a course of six studies. The book also discusses vocation, success, failure and how to handle time and stress in a Christian manner. Every point made is backed up by Scripture and there are plenty of real-life examples given. It argues that being a Christian in the workplace is not so much about what we do, our status, and how many times we share the gospel in a week, but rather who we are before God and how we reflect his character.
Those of you reading this who want zippy one-liners to use on your non-Christian work mates may be a little disappointed. It is essentially intended as a set of studies and so the chapters are not over laden with amusing anecdotes and stories. What it does offer, however, is an excellent teaching aid for the church, which could easily be used to host a series of evening seminars or workshops. If used properly this book could be a very effective tool, I recommend it.
