True Worship

Awesome!

TRUE WORSHIP
By Vaughan Roberts
STL/Paternoster. 135 pages. £5.99

What is worship? Is it just about singing songs in church, or is there more to it? Why do Christians meet together on Sundays? Is there such a thing as worship that is unacceptable to God?

In his latest book, Vaughan Roberts gives us the answers. 'True Worship' (like 'Turning Points' and 'Distinctives' before it) is easy to read, full of great illustrations, and packed with solid biblical teaching.

The main point is that worship encompasses the whole of life. Chapter 1 considers the foundation of Christian worship: conversion, through the cross of Christ, applied to us by the Spirit who enables us to believe the truth. Chapter 2 discusses the nature of worship: a life of grateful obedience in view of God's mercy in the gospel, whilst chapter 3 explains how the NT applies OT worship language to Christ: through his priestly work he has brought 'the end of religion'. Yet what we do in church is not unimportant - we meet to encourage and build one another up (chapter 4). Singing plays a vital role in this (chapter 5), enabling us to praise God too. The final chapter is a helpful summary of the biblical teaching on the Lord's Supper, with a brief appendix refuting Roman Catholic views of eucharistic sacrifice.

Throughout, the book is full of practical applications, indicating its origins as a series of sermons. Vaughan Roberts' own warm devotion to Christ and his passion for biblical truth shine through on every page. He also provides us with a model of gracious interaction, and, when necessary, courteous disagreement with the views of others.

In short, 'True Worship' is highly recommended for all thinking Christians who want to be the kind of worshippers the Father seeks, worshipping 'in Spirit and in Truth'.
