The NIV Theological Dictionary of New Testament Words

Delving deep!

THE NIV THEOLOGICAL DICTIONARY OF NEW TESTAMENT WORDS
By Verlyn D. Verbrugge
Zondervan / Paternoster. 1544 pages
ISBN 1 84227 076 1

This is a reference book. It is an abridgement of the popular New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology (NIDNTT), edited by Colin Brown, which itself was based on a German work which appeared during the 1960s and 70s.

The NIDNTT is arranged under English topics. This new shortened volume is arranged under Greek words and this allows a better discussion of the interrelationship of Greek words within a semantic field. The word groups are analysed under Old Testament and New Testament usage with sometimes a reference to classical Greek. The material deleted from the NIDNTT includes basically a number of topical articles and references to secondary literature.

This cutting out of secondary references particularly commended the book to this reader. It makes for a more concise, digestible and well-ordered access to the Biblical material. The volume is probably a shade too technical for most laymen, but for the Christian labouring to bring the word of God to a hungry congregation it is a real thrill to delve into.
