There are, perhaps, two camps when it comes to Delirious? fans. Those who, in the usual tradition of fans, have enjoyed the albums over the years and have been to a few concerts in their time.
The other kind are much more common. Those who, when asked, would say something like: 'Delirious? are OK, but I much prefer the old stuff, y'know, when they were "Cutting edge".' Cutting edge, far from being a simple epitaph to the band's former glory, is the name of Delirious's former incarnation, back in the good old days. Ever sung 'Lord you have my heart' or 'Thank you for saving me', Martin Smith worship classics which were originally brought to you by Cutting Edge? Deeper could be looked upon as an attempt to reconcile these two types of fans. The double CD contains a good slice of the aforementioned old classics as well as the pick of more recent Delirious? worship offerings and remixes. Indeed, the CD takes the title from the band's biggest chart hit.
I think it is the worship aspect of his CD which makes it attractive. Delirious? are not always the most acoustically pleasing of bands, but the depth and sincerity does engage listeners. The CD is not so much about the band as it is about the God that has inspired them. The best aspect of these songs for me, would be the intimacy of the lyrics. These are songs written to a God who can have a personal relationship with each one of us. Tracks such as 'Sanctify', 'Hands of kindness', and 'Obsession' express this with moving honesty.
If you fall into either of the aforementioned categories, Deeper will probably be a little disappointing, for the simple reason that you probably own all the best tracks already, and remixes are rather uninspiring compared with the original versions. However, if you don't own any Delirious? or Cutting Edge music, then Deeper will be a worthy addition to your CD collection.
