Growing for God

GROWING FOR GOD
By Simon J. Robinson
DayOne. 80 pages. £3.99
ISBN 1 903087 14 7

'The church ... is full of "Peter Pans" - people who have never grown in their relationship with Christ. That is why I have written this book' (p.9).

In this excellent little paperback, Simon Robinson tackles the subject of spiritual growth - what it is, why it is so important and how it happens. This book is ideally suited to someone starting the Christian life but there is plenty to challenge the more mature believer and keep him/her from complacency! Particular highlights for me were the chapter on God-centred growth (i.e. growth being primarily for God's glory); another on ensuring that difficulties in life are stepping stones to growth rather than stumbling blocks; and a couple of chapters on how our thoughts and attitudes can help or hinder growth.

At the end of the book, there is a very good study guide with questions on each chapter. I found the questions penetrating, challenging and helpful in applying the teaching. It would be a shame for readers to miss them - it might have been better to incorporate the questions into the book itself.

My only quibble is that a number of the Bible quotations are taken from the NKJV. In my opinion, sentence length and vocabulary make it a less suitable translation than the NIV for a book of this type. It's a minor quibble!

A first-rate book. I hope it will be much used.
