These books are the first three in a series of six family devotionals which have been modernised from Victorian originals. The first book contains lessons for young children, focusing mainly on Jesus. The other two books contain chronological OT lessons, focusing mainly on characters.
Each lesson is a paraphrase of a biblical story in language which is intended to be easy for children. The main points are reinforced by several questions at the end of each lesson. References are given for further study.
The books are biblical and appear to be doctrinally sound. The language is acceptable, though we sometimes paraphrased for our children (aged 7 and 4). All the verses quoted are AV, which may be faithful to the original and please some, but, again, paraphrasing was necessary. The acid test, however, must be the children's reactions. The eldest, at least, is really keen to get the book out each evening and both have enjoyed it; even the younger one can answer many of the questions. Overall, I believe we will continue through the books as a family, which must be a recommendation.
