If you are at all interested in church history, Christopher Catherwood's book will have that effect on you. Although not written from primary sources, the footnotes and bibliography are indication enough of the research that has gone into this book. It has also been written clearly enough for the reader to see the parallels within the church today. Catherwood summarises the lives of Martin Luther, John Calvin, Ulrich Zwingli, Thomas Cranmer and John Knox. Each of these men is a watershed figure and the book exposes the motivation, power and drive that pushed them to risk their position, their livelihood and their lives. This not just a book for the pastor's shelves, but one which should be read by those in the pew, to give a greater understanding of our rich Protestant heritage and the extraordinary faith and insight of those who fought for the truth of the gospel.
