Small Talks on Big Questions

Small talks on Big questions
By Selah Helms and Susan Thompson
Joshua Press, Ontario. 208 pages
ISBN 1 8934400 02 X

This book calls itself an historical companion to the Children's Catechism. Taking a few questions at a time, it illustrates the teaching by two stories, one biblical, and one from church history.

There are beautiful pencil-drawing illustrations. It is suitable for family prayers with able children in the 8-13 year-old category. The Scripture stories are accurately and imaginatively told; the church history stories tend towards being a 'great moments' and 'Who's who' directory of the last 2000 years - Athanasius, Spurgeon, etc.

Sometimes these stories are rather short on action, and high on re-formed polemic. One comment from our 12 year-old was: 'Wouldn't it be good to have some stories about ordinary Christians who didn't become preachers.' At the end of each section are some helpful questions for discussion. I would recommend it.
