This compact handbook of Christian doctrine first appeared in 1936. Since its sixth edition in 1968, it has been reprinted 17 times. Does this make it a classic? Each section of this pocket-sized systematic theology follows the same four-fold pattern:

1. An outline of the biblical doctrine, often followed by a brief historical survey of its treatment throughout church history.
2. Scripture references from which the doctrine is derived.
3. Questions - making sure you've thought about what you've read so far and taking you further!
4. A bibliography for further reading.

I found the opening sections helpful on the importance of Christian doctrine and the distinctions between biblical and systematic theology. The arguments there express the single contention of the book, namely that Christian maturity comes through a greater understanding of Christian truth.

I felt that more work could have been done on updating the bibliography. Some of the books listed would be difficult to find today. Also, the section on the Holy Spirit may fail to scratch where a modern reader is itching, since there is nothing on the gifts of the Spirit, etc. However, I would still recommend this title both for reference and for study (preferably in a group). Previous generations of Christians have found this book a great blessing. Younger generations, given sufficient encouragement, would benefit from it too!
