Hungry (Live from London)

I never used to be a huge fan of 'worship' albums. They were always American and (therefore?) slightly cheesy. In the last couple of years though, there's been a phenomenal increase in the quantity and quality of British offerings. This one comes from London Vineyard churches.
It's not quite like anything you'd hear on the radio. That's not to say it's dated though. The styles are pretty varied, from gentle soft-pop ballads to some pretty noisy riff-based rock. The musicianship throughout is polished but retains the life of a live recording.
I found this an intensely personal album. Most of the songs deal with the two themes of intimacy with God and our security in him. The two are intertwined in 'Child of God': 'With every breath, with every thought / From what is seen to the deepest part / I offer all that I've come to be / To know your love fathering me / Father, you're all I need . . .
The artwork is great too: it shows typical scenes and characters from inner-city London. For me, that summed up the purpose of the album-music to help ordinary people meet God in the midst of their hectic lives.
If you're looking for some nice background music, then this would probably do the job, but you'd miss the whole point of it. If you're looking for profound theological depth, then you may be disappointed too. But if you're looking for something to help you meditate on God in the midst of your busy week, then this could be just the thing.
