You've squashed the bug. You've seen the Dome. Now meet the Man behind the millennium.
This is the hope of Agape, the organisers of a mass evangelism strategy which utilises the Jesus video. Their training pack also contains a magazine version of Luke with testimonies, leaders' notes and an audio tape. The overriding aim of the initiative is to use the date to try and refocus those outside the Christian faith upon the Jesus of the gospel.
Individuals are encouraged to give their friends and neighbours the chance to watch the video and then attend follow-up sessions afterwards.
This teaching material aimed at the small group attempts to cover every eventuality that may be met by lay evangelists, and may need adapting, depending on the confidence and experience of participants. It is commendably strong on being 'natural' and avoiding jargon, and has good practical tips, even if it is rather excessive in attempting to anticipate difficulties. One helpful feature is the assurance that there is not any need to tell the 'whole gospel' in one go, allowing the seeker time for thought, reflection and curiosity.
The arguments for using a visual tool in this illiterate age are strong. The film, well known to many Christians, has in its favour its faithfulness to Luke, but somehow lacks the quality of a Blockbuster video. Also the abrupt opportunity to accept Christ given at the end of the account did seem to counter the affirmations about giving cringe-free space to the inquirer.
This is a package that may well prove useful for those who, while lacking confidence, realise there will never be a more appropriate time to remind the world that the Christian calendar is rooted in Jesus.
