Churches Beware!

Churches beware!
By J.C. Ryle
Evangelical Press. 175 pages.
ISBN 0 85234 419 8

A century ago, it was the passion of Bishop Ryle to communicate timeless truths in simple, straightforward language.
Here is a work that would warm his heart; an updating of Warnings to the Churches (first published by the Banner of Truth in 1967), which itself was a collection of sermons and writings from the great Bishop. Drenched in Scripture, centred on Christ, and seasoned throughout with historical illustration, these eight chapters speak of the challenges that face the church in any age. This modern version has been superbly done, retaining both dignity and simplicity of style, yet making Ryle even more accessible for a new generation of readers.
Sadly, my only criticism concerns the updated title, whose negative thrust obscures the positive nature of Ryle's work, and may hide its treasures from some. Of course, such a work cannot address the specific challenges and opportunities that face the church as its enters the next millennium, engaging with a culture vastly different from that of Ryle's, but here are truths foundational to that task.
