Revealing Jesus as Messiah - Identifying Isaiah's Servant of the Lord

REVEALING JESUS AS MESSIAH
Identifying Isaiah's Servant of the Lord
By Stuart Sacks
Christian Focus. 160 pages.
ISBN 1 85792 311 1

This is not an in-depth study of what are often called the Servant Songs in Isaiah. Neither is it an evangelistic volume for giving to unsaved Jews. But it is a devotional study which aims to draw believers into a greater dependence on and identification with the servanthood of Jesus.
Stuart Sacks outlines the historical and spiritual settings of the Songs in Isaiah 42, 49, 50 and 52, 53, and then goes on to comment on the Servant's source of power and confidence, his trials and his sufferings, his lowliness and quietness, his triumph and fruitfulness, and his atoning sacrifice.
This book is valuable because it focuses only on these Songs, and because they focus in a very condensed way on the life of our Lord. Stuart Sacks has no difficulty in showing us Jesus in the Songs as he effortlessly makes the transition from prophecy to fulfilment. All this is done in a warm and serious manner which never fails to draw out the application to our lives. His style is not an obviously logical one, more thematic, and in a way that sometimes seems 'bitty'. Unfortunately, this is not helped by the use of many unquoted Bible references that have to be looked up.
This book is a much needed antidote to man-centredness and triumphalism; provided in the best possible way - looking at Jesus the Servant. It points us to total dependence on Christ for our justification and on the Spirit for our empowering; confidence in the Lord's eternal purposes; and all leading to a humble and teachable fellowship with God.
Stuart Sacks is a Jewish believer, and one who wears his Jewishness well, by which I mean humbly.
