What a choice and edifying friend Octavius Winslow is. Have you ever made his acquaintance? Much of his material has been republished in recent years, and it is a great pleasure to welcome this further contribution from Tentmaker Publications.
We actually have here (hardback, well-bound, re-typeset and good value) four books in two. Winslow is a master of rich doctrinal and experimental exposition and application of Scripture, and these volumes abound to overflowing with good things. They were first published between 1839 and 1875 and scale heights and plumb depths often so lacking in present-day preaching and writing.
The first volume deals first with the atonement of Christ (including its design, freeness and sympathy, as well as the fearful alternative of rejecting it), and then with 'the foot of the cross and the blessings found there' (touching upon a wealth of practical subjects such as faith, love, prayer and forgiveness). This is followed in the companion volume by a very satisfying exposition of Psalm 130 and a most interesting and profitable treatment of 'the lights and shadows of spiritual life' (which, in handling its ups and downs, covers a vast array of things, including lack of spiritual knowledge, the benefits of adversity, causes of declension and directions for revivings, time spent with God in secret, service, bereavement, our own dying bed, holiness and the coming of the Lord). In all of this, an extensive range of Scripture is covered.
Winslow is helpful for all Christians, writes beautifully and is always so taken up with Christ. It would be worth reading these books slowly (not because they are difficult, but in order to savour them). Their subject matter is not for rushing but for meditating. The only disappointment to register is the rather considerable number of printing errors which have escaped the proofreader's eye. However, do not let this deter you from sending off to the publishers for these excellent volumes straight away.
