January is often the time when people seek to revitalise a sagging regime of devotions. Here are two books to consider if this is your intention.
Prof. Don Carson of Trinity Divinity School, Chicago, encourages us to follow the Bible-reading scheme invented by Robert Murray McCheyne, which involves reading about 4 chapters a day and takes us through the OT once and the NT and Psalms twice in a year. From these readings the author has selected one chapter each day on which to give his thoughts. Don Carson always mixes intellectual rigour with warm evangelical spirituality.
In our second choice of yearbook, Terence Crosby takes us back to the riches of the 19th century's greatest preacher: Charles Spurgeon. Each page is focussed on an excellent snippet from the young Spurgeon's sermons while he was minister at New Park St Chapel. Added to this, there is a suggested Bible-reading and thought for further meditation.
