How many of us think that our responsibility to support charities is fulfilled by an occasional 10p in a collecting tin outside the supermarket? In this book, the authors aim to show that this means of giving is both unfulfilling for the giver and an unreliable source of income for the charities concerned.
Instead, they suggest that a long-term commitment and personal involvement with a specific charity is much more beneficial for everyone - the charity know that they can rely on your regular financial support and the giver can see the difference their help is making to the lives of people in need.
However, this can sound daunting, so the book contains many ideas and strategies for choosing a charity, giving your time and talents, and making the money you give go as far as possible.
The book also discusses issues like the National Lottery, Third World debt and the compassion shown by Diana, Princess of Wales. Interspersed with this are real-life accounts of people whose lives have been turned around by different charities. With practical advice on motivating others, organising, publicising and some imaginative fundraising ideas, Get up and give would make an extremely useful resource for any church, school or family who want to show compassion to a hurting world.
