It is often lamented that the present generation of younger Christians has lost touch with church history. Part of the reason for that may well be that the stories from the past have only been available in book form, not their most popular medium. It is therefore so pleasing to at last see Christian organisations doing something to bring church history to the video screen, which is so much more accessible to many ordinary people.
The first of these two videos follows the story of 50 years during the 17th century, with the Scottish covenanters who fought for the principle that God, not the king or any other man, is the ruler of Christ's church. The stories of the preachers and the martyrs, the conventicles and the battles, is told with simplicity and beautiful on-location filming. We may not all agree with Christians taking up arms in the cause of Christ, but there can be no doubting the sincerity and courage of these stalwart believers, who played a large part in gaining the freedom we have today to attend the church of our choice.
The second video tells the remarkable story of C.H. Spurgeon, the pastor of London's mega-church of the Victorian era. Dr. Connolly tells us of his preaching to see hundreds saved, his struggles spiritual and physical, and his generous philanthropy in the cause of Christ. There is use of virtual reality to recreate the inside of the Metropolitan Tabernacle as it would have been in Spurgeon's day. The commentary tends a little towards the sycophantic rather than the Christocentric, but the narrator can be forgiven. It is a wonderfully inspiring hour of video footage to en-courage our faith in what God can do.
Both these videos are excellent viewing for any Christian who loves the Bible. They may prove especially helpful to some young people's groups who are serious about serving their Lord.
