This year sees the centenary of the birth of the 20th-century's greatest Christian apologist, C.S. Lewis. Many books are being published in honour of this anniversary. Rumours of Heaven is a new edition of a collection of articles first published in 1988, but still very much worth reading.
Dipping into the volume, the reader will find fine pieces about the influences of Charles Williams and G.K. Chesterton on the great Oxford don, along with investigations of Lewis's fiction, Lewis as a prophet, and many other fascinating curios.
But perhaps the most substantial contribution comes from a consideration of an attack on Lewis. There is an impression put around, not least by some readings of the production Shadowlands, that through the painful death of his wife Joy, and a bruising debate with philosopher Elizabeth Anscombe, Lewis lost his faith towards the end of his life. This is answered very fully by Richard Purtill, a long-time US Lewis devotee.
