We can profit greatly from each other's experiences and insights. This video gives two lovely Christians the opportunity to share with us, in an informal way, their feelings as they face death from terminal cancer.
The film comprises mostly of interviews with Verna Wright, a doctor who was one of the founders of United Beach Missions, and Christina Maclean, a senior nurse who established a hospice in the Western Isles of Scotland. They talk openly about their reactions to the diagnosis, their doubts and frustrations, and their confidence in God.
The interviews are interspersed with photography, music and a summary of their accomplishments. Perhaps the least successful parts of the film are those in which the presenter, Sian Baker, talks directly to camera: she comes across as rather stern. This could not be said of the two 'stars' who have a gracious approach and constantly direct our attention away from themselves and towards God. No doubt their illness made it impossible but it would have been fascinating to have some footage of them in conversation with each other.
This would be a valuable resource for those who find themselves in a similar situation. It was a good idea to film two individuals, because the differences between them are obvious and forestall any criticism that 'my circumstances aren't like that'. It might also inspire those who have access to a camcorder to make a similar record, which would require less physical effort than speaking in public but might be of great benefit to a wide range of people.
