A Fistful of Heroes

A Fistful of Heroes
By John Pollock
Christian Focus Publications
272 pages. £4.95
ISBN 1 857921 44 5

This is a splendid compendium of short biographies from church history covering the period from the early 18th century to mid 20th century.
It is a combination of two previous publications, and we meet here many well-known characters like Carey, Wilberforce and Elizabeth Fry, along with lesser known mortals like Ernest Presswood.
John Pollock's style is always accessible and he regularly draws helpful spiritual lessons from the Christian lives he records. Young people in particular need better role models than the stars of our present century provide, and this book makes fine bedtime reading.
And the three men I admire the most from this volume? I think it has to be Hudson Taylor, Stanley Smith and Mary Slessor!
