Building on the success of Dig Deeper: tools to unearth the Bible’s treasure (Nigel Beynon and Andrew Sach), Sach and Alldritt apply the same methods to explain and illuminate the book of Exodus.
To be frank, I found the undeviatingly ‘jolly hockey sticks’ style of writing a bit tiresome — but then the book is not aimed at Stone Age survivals like me, and is, in fact, an ideal gift for a young beginner with Exodus.
The writing, however, is never banal or less than reverent; every page is informative and enlightening. The Exodus narrative is taken seriously both as history and as the ever-relevant Word of God. Useful analyses, tables and diagrams are offered throughout, coupled with a bibliography which shows how thoroughly the authors have done their homework, but which could have been pruned for the better interests of the expected readership. Frequent reference is made to the earlier book, Dig Deeper, and readers might well be advised to start there, but Dig even deeper is fully understandable on its own, and wonderfully worth the effort.
