There’s a plaque at the OMF headquarters in Sevenoaks listing the men, women and children who died ‘for Christ’s sake during the anti-foreign outbreak 1900’. This book paints a vivid picture of the kind of suffering our recent forefathers endured.
The Rev. Archibald E. Glover was a curate at the bustling St. Paul’s, Onslow Square, London, when he responded to the call to go to China as a missionary. He left behind his pregnant wife and their six-month-old son. They joined him a year or so later.
The book is a memorable, humbling and inspiring read. It’s memorable for the extent of persecution and hardship the family went through for the sake of Christ. On many occasions, they were told by local townsfolk that they would be executed in the morning, only to see God’s provision of escape. It’s humbling because we see God’s children living faithfully in extreme conditions. It is inspiring, because, time and again, the reader will pause to give thanks to God, to praise him, and to pray for those persecuted now.
About two-thirds of the book is the account of their escape. The rest is correspondence, mainly between ‘Arch’ and his parents back home. The second part is an interesting background for the first, and gives us a clearer understanding of who the Rev. Glover was.
We live in an age when, at least in Britain, it seems people are not queuing up to come to church. There is a hardness of heart, and a growing difficulty in ministry. Books such as this will, I think, become increasingly helpful to encourage us to press on.
