BEWARE OF LIVING TOO LONG!
and other letters to my church family

John Gillespie writes a letter each week to the church he leads in Cornwall. A year’s worth of those letters is shared in this book.
John communicates as every caring minister should. He strikes the balance between encouragement and challenge with warmth for and understanding of his flock and their circumstances. This clearly comes from a loving pastoral heart. Furthermore, he writes creatively, passionately and simply in a way that each member (whatever their age or educational abilities) of his congregation will understand. His quirky letter headings manage to whet the appetite for what he is about to share.
Each letter is based on a verse or short passage of Scripture, but many subjects are pertinent to what is going on in the church or the news at the time of writing. John often quotes from great writers such as Amy Carmichael and Schaeffer and others not so familiar. He calls his people to prayer, to know their Bibles, to explore church history, to sacrificial living and to spread the good news of the gospel. Above all, however, there is a clear longing that both he and they will know and love Jesus better.
If you are not a keen reader this might just be the book for you. The short chapters make it perfect to read daily.
Unfortunately the outer appearance of the book doesn’t really do it justice. ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’ is definitely true here. I have several beautifully bound daily devotionals on my shelf that have not been half the blessing that this book has been to me. I have loved reading it and highly recommend it.
