A Godward Life - 120 Daily Readings

Aspiring to glory

A Godward Life: 120 Daily Readings
By John Piper
Multnomah Publishers, USA. 336 pages. $14.99 (hardback)

The author of this book is known to many for his passion for the supremacy of God: in the church, in missions, in preaching, in the home and in all of life. He is the senior pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Minneapolis, and has written on most of these topics. This month he is the main speaker at the FIEC Caister week.
This book is a selection from weekly letters addressed to his church and arranged as daily readings or meditations. 'The banner over every meditation in this book is the conviction that God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him' (p.20).
A whole range of subjects is considered; particularly matters relating to home and family, and including aspects of the Christian life such as prayer and various social problems. The evil of abortion on demand, against which Piper is a crusader, is given five challenging readings. Words of great wisdom are directed to those with flawed marriages (p.33 ff); and anyone tempted to seek a divorce should read this first. Suggested resolutions for teenagers and reflections on reading good books add to the variety.
John Piper is of impeccable orthodoxy and possesses a passion for God's truth to triumph in the whole of our lives. So his love of truth is not remote from life and its problems. Here a pastor's heart is beating loudly. And he knows how to cast truths out of old moulds into fresh and challenging channels of thought, so that as Christians we should walk less stiffly and be better able to commend the gospel of Christ.
This is not a book for those who want to go on 'trusting in their horse' (i.e. any Christian institution) (p.192 ff), but for those who aspire to glorify and serve God in everything, whatever the cost. Worthy of a wide circulation.
