There is a short biography of Maurine Murchison at the end of the book which sets these stories in the context of her life. Maurine devotes each chapter or story to one particular aspect of her childhood in London during World War II.
These stories are told vividly and engagingly so that our attention is held throughout. Part of each story is a spiritual application arising naturally and helpfully from what Maurine has related. She then gives us a biblical reference which is well worth looking up to see the truth in Scripture which has been shown in the story.
This could be forced and unnatural: it is anything but. I enjoyed reading the Scriptures indicated and found them helpful. Maurine’s biography tells us she was responsible for the formation of almost 500 women’s Bible study groups. Her love of Scripture and its application is obvious in this book.
Who should read it? Young people, children who can read well on their own. Young people often do projects as school on World War II and this would be a valuable insight into what life was like. Older people too would really enjoy and benefit from reading it. It’s not every day you read of the five points of Calvinism alongside such things as an account of getting lost in a London smog! I commend the book warmly.
