NEW YORK CITY ADVENTURES
By Donna Vann
Christian Focus. 93 pages. £4.99
ISBN 978-1-84550-546-2
This children’s book about New York interweaves information, both historical and current, about New York with simple teaching on the Christian life.
So, for example, the chapter about the role of New York in the War for Independence from Britain speaks of a teacher called Nathan Hale who gave his life for his country and then makes the obvious connection with ‘another young teacher’ whose death was also on behalf of others. The gospel is clearly presented in a way that children would be able to read, possibly with a little help, and understand. Each chapter also includes suggestions of things to see and do in New York.
It is written in a colourful way, giving a real picture of the sights and sounds that would greet one in New York. The themes covered range from slavery, immigration, sweatshops, street gangs, wildlife in Central Park and the terrorist attacks of 9/11, to name a few. The reader is introduced to many characters, some famous and others unsung heroes who quietly trusted God and tried to make a difference in the lives of others. The challenge is made to the reader to reach others with the good news of Jesus too.
The best praise for this book comes from my eight-year-old, who said: ‘I think it’s a very good book and it’s always pointing to Jesus’.
