WHAT WONDROUS LOVE IS THIS (CD)
By Helen Shapiro
Manna Music. £13.00
Helen Shapiro began her singing career in 1961, aged 14, with songs such as ‘Don’t Treat Me Like a Child’ and ‘Walking Back to Happiness’.
Nowadays she uses her talent to share her faith in Jesus with others. What Wondrous Love Is This is a brand new collection of songs, Helen’s first gospel album in 12 years.
It opens with an upbeat Latin number, ‘Bless the Lord O My Soul’, which is slightly reminiscent of the theme tune to Strictly Come Dancing; it immediately raises a smile and makes those who have a tendency to, dance around the kitchen. Like many of the tracks on the album, it is based on Scripture — this time Psalm 103. Helen’s big bluesy voice suits the jazz-tinged style of the music, which ranges from the up-tempo dance-alongs of the first song, to the more laid back lounge vibes of ‘Lovely Jesus’, from the Jewish influenced ‘Blessed are the People’ to the big band reworkings of classic hymns ‘He Giveth More Grace’ and ‘Great is Thy Faithfulness’. There are also more quiet, thoughtful moments in songs such as ‘Song from Isaiah 53’ and title track ‘What Wondrous Love is This’.
Overall this is an enjoyable, varied CD and a good contrast to the plethora of guitar-based contemporary Christian music around at the moment. The way it incorporates so much Scripture into the lyrics makes it very edifying too!
