Can a sequel ever be as good as the first in the series?
This is the story describing the impact of a book and the development of an influential ministry known as Sowing Seeds.
The original book, One Step Beyond, by Gram Seed was published in 2008. It is the story of a life transformed from football hooliganism, violence, alcoholism, heroin, crack cocaine, several jail terms and a six-day coma. Set in Middlesbrough, it is a great example of the power of the gospel to transform an individual from death to life.
The sequel describes the ways in which God has used his testimony in many prisons and among ex-offenders. Establishing effective ministry, especially among young offenders, has not been easy. Others have come alongside to share the vision and develop the work. Their stories are included, along with contributions from police officers, chaplains and young offenders whose lives have been changed.
My perspective on It Must be Love is that the original is likely to be a better general read than the sequel. For those who know Gram and are involved in the ongoing work, this is a powerful example of what God continues to do through a less sophisticated version of Jonathan Aitken in the northeast.
