This is the second in a trilogy of books published for the London Men’s Conventions, but it would be a great shame if only men used it!
It is aimed at providing concise teaching on key aspects of historic evangelical faith in a form that can be readily used in one-to-one or small group studies. There is little in the content that applies only to men, and so it actually turns out to be a very handy brief guide for Christians of all genders and stages of spiritual growth.
There are some features that make this book helpfully different from others of its type. The chapters are arranged historically, and contain not only the expected biblical teaching and study guide, but also a brief biography of a historical figure who particularly contended for that truth (e.g. Athanasius on the deity of Christ, Warfield on the authority of the Bible, Owen on regeneration). There is also a ‘Real Lives’ section in each chapter, featuring a brief account of someone affected by the teaching in question.
The 12 chapters are mostly those you would expect — Christ, sin, penal substitution, justification by faith, etc., but there are one or two inclusions that helpfully reflect the passions of the editors. This reviewer found Carswell on ‘The Priority of Evangelism’ and Jackman on the ‘Centrality of Bible Teaching’ particularly refreshing in the context. There is also a very helpful and comparatively substantial introductory chapter by Richard Coekin, in which he spells out with great clarity both the importance of doctrine generally, and how the 12 truths explored in the book relate naturally to each other.
In days where so many key gospel truths appear to be under attack, this is a robust, orthodox, clearly presented theological study guide which ought to do exactly as the authors intended.
