Both ends of a romance
THE NOTEBOOK
Cert. 15
Director: Nick Cassavetes
This is not a new film, but has become available recently on DVD.
Set in America, it is a fairly run-of-the-mill romance, charting the ups and downs of the relationship between a rich girl and a poor boy.
What makes it interesting is that the movie looks at the love story from both ends of its time span. Such tales usually concentrate on the beginning. But how does love play out in old age, with the approach of death and the onset of dementia? The key, according to the film, is to keep telling the story.
With some healthy realism mixed in, it probably does err towards the fairy tale side of things. It is a little too keen to convey a message of ‘love conquers all’. But it is moving and engaging.
As Christians we believe that love is the most potent force in life. But the reason for this is that the ultimate reality which sustains all life is the God of love revealed in Christ. It is only he who can make sense of love.
