PLANTING CHURCHES
A framework for practitioners
By Stuart Murray
Paternoster. 240 pages. £9.99
ISBN 978-1-84227-611-2
No doubt we all have differing views concerning church planting. However, the poor spiritual state of our nation makes it essential that we consider whether God is calling us to such an exciting but risky adventure.
Stuart Murray has 30 years’ experience as a practitioner and lecturer in church planting and is the founder of Urban Expression, a pioneering church-planting agency. His background demands we take note of what he has to say. Planting Churches covers just about every topic and question you may have on the subject. He demonstrates a thorough understanding of the good and the bad to be experienced in this demanding strategy of growing Christ’s church. At the end of each chapter are helpful questions to be explored by the reader.
This is not so much a book to be read from cover to cover, but to be a resource to be consulted by those thinking through the subject, especially as three out of five plants actually fail!
I found the book hard going at times because of the inevitable amount of detail on each topic. I would also have liked to see more theological depth in its pages: biblical perspectives which would have lifted the heart and inspired the will to set out on a journey which would ultimately bring glory to Christ.
