New Word Alive punters will be rushing to buy this, the first studio album to include both of this year’s Townend / Getty hits: ‘Come People Of The Risen King’ and ‘Creation Sings’. But there’s so much more to this package, including five more studio debut songs alongside and some truly excellent reworking of some older material. And it may be just a year on from Stuart’s live worship project There Is A Hope, yet those initial hints of a new folk direction are now much more fully developed.
If you haven’t heard Stuart talk about his music before I recommend watching the DVD documentary before getting stuck into the CD, because then you’ll enjoy it even more.
Power to the people
Townend is always looking for a fresh angle (with Monument to Mercy being perhaps his most daring to date). This newfound folk direction is not a fad, but something deep-rooted coming from a conviction that we need more music of and for the people. In contrast to much modern worship music, the focus here is on simple melodies, strong enough to stand on their own, rather than on complex rhythmic lines that need the support of a rock band.
That said, the musicians on this recording are outstanding, and there’s wonderful variety: guitars, whistles, fiddle, banjo, string bass, harmonium, accordion, viola, cello and even a bouzouki (whatever that is). Jazz pianist and arranger, Mark Edwards, deserves special mention (check out his Hymn to Grace album), as does folk singer Cathy Burton (who appeared in the New Word Alive ‘after hours’ programme this year).
Although three quarters of the music come from the remarkable and prolific Townend / Getty partnership, there are some classic Townend tunes in there too. But as usual, it’s the lyrics that really do it for me:
Creation gazed upon his face;
The Ageless One in time’s embrace
Unveiled the Father’s plan
Of reconciling God and man.
A second Adam walked the earth
Whose blameless life would break the curse,
Whose death would set us free
To live with him eternally.
In a word: Hallelujah!
