Tamar, Bathsheba & Tamar

Can God use bad experiences?

TAMAR, BATHSHEBA & TAMAR
Encountering three women with messed-up lives
By Julia Jones
Day One. 72 pages. £5.00
ISBN 978-1-84625-141-2

This short book explores the pain of the sexual relationships of three women, and is written with full confidence that God can use all experiences and situations for his glory.

Whatever your own experience (sex gone wrong, sex gone right, or no sex at all), this book is relevant. The breadth of topics will help you grapple with many of life’s challenges: including handling temptation, avoiding complacency about sin, finding comfort in distress (including rape and bereavement).

The book is broken down into manageable chunks which makes it easy to read (and ideal for busy people). The accessibility of the book does not mean that it lacks content. On the contrary, it is full of biblically sound and thought-provoking material.

Each brief chapter expands on the relevant passage, followed by suggestions for further study and questions which apply the topic to everyday life. For instance, ‘What bad experiences have you faced in your life? Do you believe that God can use this for his glory? How might this happen?’ Questions such as these require readers to be honest with themselves and God in order to make the most of the book.

Reading this book and using the study questions has provided refreshing and challenging Bible study times for me. If your own times in God’s Word need a boost, I’d recommend this book. In addition, although the nature of the material is quite personal, small groups of women would greatly benefit from reading and discussing the book together.
