As the author Steph is one of my closest friends, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to give an unbiased review of this little book, so what a good job it’s a great read! Steph has recorded the experience she has had working with a Further Education (FE) College Christian Union, both as a student and as UCCF Staffworker, and it is a very readable and honest account of how difficult it can be working with small struggling CUs.
These are not tales of mass conversions or revival in the college, in fact no one really becomes a Christian, and often you get the sense of the isolation and real discouragement that it can be standing up for Jesus in a hostile environment. But as the book journeys through the life of this small CU, which at times only consisted of Steph herself, you see how God answered prayer in amazing and unexpected ways and was in fact at work behind the scenes.
The book is mostly aimed at those who are involved in the FE/sixth form student CU world, whether that be as a student or lecturer or supporter, but actually it is a good read for anyone wanting to stand up for Jesus in school, uni or work and finding it a struggle. Steph manages to write in a frank and appealing way that draws you in and often shows the funny side of things that might otherwise be discouraging. I would encourage you to get hold of a copy, read it with a cup of tea and a chocolate Hobnob (it’s very short and snappy), and use it to pray for those involved in CUs up and down the country, knowing the reality of the ups and downs of speaking and living for Jesus.
